CABRAMATTA V WINDSOR MATCH REPORT (30/08/10)

Cabramatta has claimed yet another top five scalp and in the process, avoided the dreaded wooden spoon after a commanding 32-16 victory over the Windsor Wolves last Saturday night.

It looked like being a long night for the Two Blues when powerhouse back-rower Wiremu Weepu barged over for the home side in just the third minute of play, but the Cabramatta side soon worked their way back into the match through an expansive style of footy that continually stretched the Wolves defence.

The Two Blues were rewarded for their enterprising play in the 17th minute when fullback Donny Thompson flew through to collect a superb Andrew Dallalana grubber-kick to score under the sticks.

A tiring Wolves defence was exploited just six minutes later when Mason Pure burst through on the right edge before finding interchange back-rower Jason Thompson in support to score his first try in the Bundaberg Red Cup.

Pure, Thompson and giant winger Willie ‘T-Rex’ Taukafa were giving the Wolves’ left side defence nightmares and it was no surprise to see Cabramatta’s third try scored down this corridor once again, with five eighth Matt Lamb proving too elusive for a retreating defence to score beside the posts. Dallalana converted and the Two Blues had all the momentum heading into the break: 16-6 ahead.

Both forward packs continued to tear into each other after the resumption of play but while there was little space in the middle third of the field, the Two Blues were finding holes at will on the edges of the Wolves’ defence.

It took just seven minutes of the second half for the Two Blues to extend their lead to 16 points: Louis Vaiotu finishing off a slick backline movement on the left side of the field and Dallalana converting in grand fashion from the sideline.

With a lack of ball and quality field position, any chance of a Windsor comeback seemed unlikely heading into the final quarter. But after a series of back-to-back penalties deep in Cabramatta territory, nuggety interchange hooker Albert Peters was able to burrow his way over from close range.

The Two Blues wasted little time in reply, effectively putting the Wolves out of the contest with a well-deserved try to Taukafa off a Mason Pure kick. The pair combined again just minutes later for Cabramatta’s final four-pointer of the night: Pure sending his wingman down the right flank and in to score with a sublime flick pass.

A late try for Wolves’ centre Baden Hall was mere consolation for the home side, who now find themselves in fifth position on the ladder and just one loss from elimination. For Cabramatta, the performance was yet another reminder of what last year’s grand finalists are capable of on their day. Coach Corey Ruttle perfectly summed up the thoughts of the Two Blues camp: “It wasn’t the season we were hoping for but I’m proud that we finished the way that we did.”

CABRAMATTA V THE ENTRANCE TIGERS MATCH REPORT (23/08/10)

Cabramatta has rewarded their loyal fans with a thumping 52-16 win over The Entrance Tigers at New Era Stadium last Saturday night.

With nothing but pride to play for, the Two Blues stunned their more fancied rivals with a splendid mix of flair and aggression. Despite missing the likes of Pat Fitzgerald, James Roche and form centre Francis Vaiotu through injury, the home side out-enthused the Tigers from the opening whistle, with newcomers Boyd Brown, Robbie Beardmore, Shaun Vaotuua, Jason Thompson and Willie Taukafa providing much needed spark to the Cabramatta side.

A halftime scoreline of 18-16 gave no indication of the carnage that lay ahead in the second stanza and nor did the opening minutes of the match, with Coedi Towney proving too elusive from a scrum win to cross out wide in just the 4th minute for the visitors.

Cabramatta wasted little time in posting their reply, with winger Josh McIlvenny finishing off a slick backline movement to score in the 8th minute. Half Andrew Dallalana converted from out wide and the Two Blues hit the front 6-4.

The lead was then extended to eight in the 13th minute, with workaholic lock Keith Heckenberg proving too big and too strong from close range.

Cabramatta's defence appeared to go missing for the next 10 minutes with two relatively soft tries conceded to Troy and Beau Woodley either side of the 20 minute mark, but the home side was able to regain the lead in the 29th minute through giant winger Willie Taukafa: the local junior muscling his way over in the right corner to post his first four pointer in the Bundaberg Red Cup.

On the back of a two point lead, the Two Blues returned to the field for the second half full of confidence and energy, and this was soon reflected on the scoreboard with tries to McIlvenny (his second), centre Daniel Cray and dynamic fullback Donny Thompson all within 10 minutes of the resumption.

The match was then all but sealed in the 54th minute, when the ever-present Matt Lamb capped off a superb performance with a brilliant solo try. Dallalana converted to take the score out to 42-16.

Fullback Thompson soon found himself in the sin-bin for his role in a mid-match melee but the setback only galvanised the home side, who posted two further tries to Taukafa and crowd favourite Nick Kassis to cross the half century mark.

Towney and back-rower Beau Woodley tried hard for the Tigers, but the visitors were unable to match the intensity of the Two Blues for large periods of the game and they will need to regroup quickly heading into the finals.

The Two Blues were dominant from 1-17 but Coach Corey Ruttle paid special tribute to halves Dallalana and Lamb as well as fullback Thompson for their role in setting up the win. Ruttle also took time to acknowledge the efforts of the young players in his side, many playing in just their first or second game in the top grade: "Boyd [Brown], Robbie Beardmore, Jason Thompson, Shaun [Vaotuua] and Willie Taukafa did a great job stepping up for us tonight. It's a great sign for the club to see so many local juniors receiving an opportunity and then making the most of it."

Long-time Tigers supporter Bill Smith admitted that it would be a long ride up the freeway for both himself and The Entrance boys: "It's a long way to come down to see the boys lose like they did and it will be an even longer trip back for Jamy [Forbes] and the lads [but] we'll be back next week and we'll be there for the finals. Credit to Cabra' though. They're a top side on their day and I'm surprised they aren't higher up the ladder."

CABRAMATTA V CAMPBELLTOWN MATCH REPORT (09/08/10)

Cabramatta have overcome a spirited Campbelltown Eagles outfit 22-20 at New Era Stadium on Saturday night.

Locked at one win apiece after both clashes this season, the crowd was anticipating a fierce contest and they were not disappointed, with the result in the balance right up until the 80th minute.

Campbelltown were the first to cross for the evening: Jeremy Evans capitalising on an overlap on the right hand side to score in the corner after just seven minutes. A tough battle was ensuing in the forwards, but when Cabramatta decided to shift the ball wide they were able to respond with a try of their own: Francis Vaiotu bursting on to a select pass from half Andrew Dallalana before finding winger Josh McIlvenny in the 15th minute.

Both teams went try for try – The Two Blues first through Daniel Cray and the Eagles in turn through hard-working second-rower Pat Franks – before the head-geared hero McIlvenny found himself in the thick of the action yet again, this time in defusing a four-pointer.

A pin-point cross-field bomb from Wayde Dunley was tapped back into the waiting arms of centre Dayne Craig, who looked certain to score from just a metre out. But McIlvenny, showing tremendous strength, was able to reel in the noted try-scorer and earn Cabramatta the change-over. On the next play, second-rower Nick Kassis caught the opposition’s defence unawares, slicing through a gap from less than 10 metres out from his own line and with no one in front of him, he showed great speed to score one of the most remarkable tries of the season.

Campbelltown were able to level the scores at 16 all just prior to half-time through a try to Inno Innessio off a Damien Kennedy cut-out pass, but the Kassis try would go on to hurt the Eagles at the back-end of the game.

A low-scoring second-half signified the desperation of both sides for the win and it took a sensational offload from Matt Lamb to break the game open in the 48th minute. The stocky five-eighth dummied, shimmied and poked his head through the line before delivering the final pass just inches from the ground to a flying McIlvenny to score under the sticks. Dallalana kicked his third goal for the evening and the Two Blues were now ahead 22-16.

Mistakes began to creep into the Two Blues game and Campbelltown quickly capitalised with some quick hands down the short side sending winger Tyrone Faliiega over to score in the 58th minute. Dunley missed the difficult conversion and the score remained at 22-20 in favour of the Two Blues.

Cabramatta’s goal line defence, virtually non-existent for much of the season, was back to its dogged best and it needed to be, as the Eagles threw everything at the Two Blues in the dying stages of the match. Coach Corey Ruttle was ecstatic with the manner in which his team protected a two-point lead during the final quarter: “We’ve emphasised hanging tough in defence all season. I’m just glad that tonight, the boys stuck to their guns and grinded out a much deserved victory.” Ruttle singled out evergreen lock Keith Heckenberg and Josh McIlvenny as the outstanding performers in the winning side. For the Eagles, Sam Hoare was a threat as always out of acting half, combining equally as well with his forwards as he did with his halves. Prop forward Allen Soultan provided plenty of aggression for the visitors despite nursing a corked calf throughout the second half, himself acknowledging that the long-range try to Kassis was probably the turning point in the match: “That Kassis try really killed us. I felt that were really starting to get on top there and were close to scoring ourselves. All of a sudden, within two tackles, they’ve run the length of the field. [It was] a 12 point turnaround that ended up costing us in the end.”

Only three points in total has separated the sides in the two matches played at New Era Stadium in 2010 and after witnessing such a titanic battle, it’s hard to believe that both teams remain on the bottom of the premiership ladder.

PENRITH BROTHERS V CABRAMATTA TWO BLUES MATCH REPORT (1/08/10)

Penrith Brothers have kept their top five hopes alive with a hard fought 24-18 win over the Cabramatta Two Blues last Sunday.
Poor weather meant the Penrith side had to shift the match from home ground Nepean Park to New Era Stadium. Despite losing their home ground advantage, they were too slick and too determined for the Two Blues, who remain firmly entrenched on the bottom of the ladder.
Brothers dominated the opening exchanges and after a series of near-misses, were able to capitalise through a try out wide to flying number one Rodney Peake.
Cabramatta quickly cleaned up their act however, and with some quality field position of their own, were able to hit back through back-rower Nick Kassis, who steamed on to an inside ball from halfback Andrew Dallalana in the 16th minute.
Brothers dominated the remainder of the half with four further tries, two of which went to Peake, giving the dynamic outside back a first half hat-trick. Hooker Shanan Wood and five eighth Dean Springfield also crossed for the visitors and had it not been for some wayward goal-kicking from Chris Morson, the contest could have been all over for the Two Blues after the first 40 minutes. A late penalty goal by Springfield saw the visitors head to the sheds with a 22-6 lead.
Another half-time rev-up from Two Blues coach Corey Ruttle had the desired effect for the home side, as the Two Blues came out firing in the second stanza.
Francis Vaiotu confirmed his reputation as the best whole runner in the competition by charging on to an inside ball from Dallalana to cross in the 53rd minute and after the veteran half converted, the Two Blues trailed by only 10 points.
Solid goal line defence from the Cabramatta team frustrated their more fancied rivals and when Nick Kassis crossed for his second try of the match in the 63rd minute off a wonderful pass from Keith Heckenberg, the home crowd sensed an upset was on the cards.
Brothers’ defence managed to hold firm and after a series of errors from the Two Blues, it was clear that the Penrith boys would hold on for the win. Two late field goals from Springfield put the icing on the cake as the Brothers side ran out winners 24-18.
Again it was a case of close, but not close enough for the Two Blues, while for the Penrith side, their chance of qualifying for their maiden finals appearance appears well on track. The home side was best served by hooker Daniel Galati and forwards Jamie Small and Keith Heckenberg, while for Brothers, five eighth Springfield and back-rower Latu Fafita were a constant threat for the Two Blues defence.

MOUNTIES V CABRAMATTA MATCH REPORT (26/07/10)

Mounties have all but ended Cabramatta’s hopes of a finals birth with a 38-28 victory at New Era Stadium on Sunday.

Despite losing both encounters with the Two Blues so far this season, including a thumping 48-16 defeat just a fortnight ago, it was the Mounties side that started the match with greater energy and desire. It took just four minutes of play for this to be reflected on the scoreboard, as winger Adham Elzabedhieh finished off a slick backline movement to cross out wide.

Cabramatta looked to match the flair of their opponents but errors inside their own half hurt them dearly, and when front rower Pat Galea cleaned up the scraps from a crossfield bomb to score in the 15th minute, it looked like being a long afternoon for the home side.

Cabramatta winger Keith Wicks had other ideas, first forcing his way over in the left corner to reduce the lead to eight after 20 minutes, and then crossing for his second try six minutes later off an Andrew Dallalana kick.

The Two Blues appeared to have all the momentum but basic errors again allowed Mounties back into the contest and they capitalised in fine style through tries in the 35th and 38th minute to Shannon Chapman and Charlie Herekotukutuku respectively.

Cabramatta coach Corey Ruttle was infuriated with the ease at which the Mounties side were able to cross from close range and tore strips off his troops at halftime.

The speech had the desired effect, with Daniel Cray chiming into the backline and showing sensational footwork to score out wide after 49 minutes. As Mounties began to tire, Cabramatta’s little men worked their way into the contest and had it not been for some last ditch defence, the home side could have hit the lead much earlier. It took a piece of individual brilliance from Two Blues five eighth Donny Thompson to split the game wide open, with the playmaker chipping over the defence, regathering and putting Francis Vaiotu over to score. Dallalana converted and the crowd rose to their feet as the Two Blues hit the lead for the first time in the match.

Mounties appeared to be out on their feet leading into the final quarter but a costly mistake on just the third tackle from Cabramatta off the restart gave the visitors the boost they needed. Drew Dalton barged his way over down the short side to restore the lead and from then on it was all Mounties. Veteran prop Terre Glassie was next to score in the 64th minute, proving too big and too strong from close range. Anthony Farah put the match out of reach for the Two Blues with a neat try of his own in the 74th minute. Utility Cameron Collenette continued with his recent tryscoring form with a late touchdown for the home team but it was mere consolation as Mounties held on to win by 10.

Mounties Interchange forward Chester Paselio said their season was now well and truly back on track: “They [Cabramatta] played nearly perfect football two weeks ago and I’m just glad we could turn the tables on them this time. ‘Rochey’ and Donny Thompson seemed to be working well together in the middle and they came at us hard a few times during the match but our hooker and halves guided us to victory.”

Cabramatta front-rower Keith Heckenberg put in a sensational 80 minute performance and was duly rewarded with man of the match honours. Heckenberg said that while his team may be out of the finals race, it’s important that they take something from the remaining five games: “I think we’ve just got to work hard to finish on a high note and take what we can from the remaining games. We’re definitely looking to win as many of them as we can.”

BANKSTOWN V CABRAMATTA (19/07/10)

The Bankstown Bulls have consolidated their position on top of the Bundaberg Red Cup premiership ladder with a bruising 36-20 win over the Cabramatta Two Blues at New Era Stadium on Sunday.

A vocal home crowd were treated to a frenetic opening period as the desperate Two Blues threw everything at their more fancied rivals. Elusive Bulls fullback Adnan Saleh split the match wide open in the 12th minute with a sensational kick-return try and it looked like the visitors had succeeded in weathering the storm. Two Blues fullback Donny Thompson had other ideas, flying on to a deft pass from Keith Heckenberg in the 17th minute to cross under the sticks. Both sides continued to go try for try: Saleh crossing for his second in the 29th minute off a Toufic Nicholas pass before debutant Keith Wicks returned serve for the home side in the 35th minute, pouncing on a pin-point kick from Thompson.

The Bulls then showed why they are Premiership favourites in the period just before and after halftime, with tries to Little and winger Brent Beddy putting the Bankstown boys ahead by 12. A further four-pointer to try-scoring whiz Danny Barakat then effectively put the match out of reach for the Two Blues as the scoreline blew out to 30-12.

But Ill-discipline from the visitors allowed the Two Blues back into the contest, with back-to-back penalties leading to consecutive tries to barnstorming centre Cameron Collenette.

With the difference now down to 10, the crowd was left to chew their nails through a tension-filled final 10 minutes as Cabramatta continued to threaten the Bankstown line. But just as their fans have witnessed so often this season, mistakes at vital moments proved their ultimate downfall. The Bulls capped off an impressive victory with a late try to replacement Nathan Dibb from close range. A scoreline of 36-20 probably wasn’t reflective of the ferocity and closeness of the contest and the Bulls will find it difficult to back-up on Wednesday in their catch-up match with Campbelltown.

For the home side, the loss of Patrick Fitzgerald in the warm-up hampered their preparation, but it did provide the opportunity for young Jason Thompson to make his debut for the Bundy Red cup side off the interchange bench. After already playing a match for the Sydney Cup side, Jason acquitted himself well when introduced by Coach Ruttle in the second half. Older brother Donny Thompson was everywhere for the Two Blues and deservedly picked up man of the match. Henry Iuta was rewarded for an aggressive display with the player’s player award. The visitors were best served by halves Little and Toufic Nicholas, while Saleh and winger Sene Tala were dangerous out wide.

The Cabramatta Two Blues are again at home next Sunday against local rivals Mounties at New Era Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm.

SYDNEY SHIELD MATCH

Cabramatta 'Two Blues' V Bankstown City Bulls July 18th 1.20pm

Cabramatta 'Two Blues' V Mounties July 25th 1.20pm

CABRAMATTA V MOUNTIES MATCH REPORT (13/07/10)

Cabramatta has returned to the winner’s circle in fine style with a thumping 48-16 win over cross-town rivals Mounties on Sunday.

With a completion rate of over 80 per cent for the first time this season, the Two Blues played a near faultless first half as they raced to a 24-4 lead. Big second rower Mason Pure and centre Francis Vaiotu were giving the Mounties left edge defence nightmares in the opening quarter and both were rewarded with four pointers: Pure in the 10th minute off a Matt Lamb pass and Vaiotu in the 18th minute. Half Andrew Dallalana, fresh from the birth of his daughter Indie May just two days earlier, nailed both conversions from out wide for a 12 nil lead.

Despite a string of errors inside their own half, Mounties continued to throw the ball around in typical fashion and were rewarded with a try to winger Adham Elzabedieh after 26 minutes. Unfortunately for the home side, that was as close as they’d get for the remainder of the half as Cabramatta posted further tries to Vaiotu and flame-haired winger Daniel Cray, both off Dallalana cross-field kicks.

Capitalising on back-to-penalties, Mounties began the second stanza deep in Cabramatta territory but the last pass continued to let them down. A loose ball was pounced on by winger Josh McIlvenny after 46 minutes and the head-geared hero raced nearly the length of the field to sink the hearts of the Mounties faithful. Dallalana continued his outstanding form with the boot with his fifth conversion of the afternoon and despite a determined charge from winger Terrence Dodd to score for the home side shortly afterwards, the Two Blues were far from finished.

Second rower Nick Kassis steamed on to a short ball from Dallalana in the 55th minute and as the defence converged, found a flying Henry Iuta who was too big and too strong from close range. Cameron Collenette, filling in at left centre then found himself in open space after yet another Mounties turn-over to score his first try for the season. Kassis then capped off an explosive second half performance with a try of his own and when Donny Thompson converted, the visitors had their sights set on the 50 point mark.

Mounties managed to defend their line in the remaining minutes and scored a consolation try of their own via Charlie Herekotukutuku off a scrum win. Drew Dalton converted for a final scoreline of 48-16.

Cabramatta coach Corey Ruttle expressed relief at his team’s win: “It’s going to be a whole lot better watching the video this week, I can tell you that much. We scored some great tries today and all the boys contributed in some way to the win.”

Mounties winger Terrence Dodd was surprised at the scoreline but knew that it was always going to be a tough match: “The local derby is always a big occasion but I can’t believe the scoreline ended up as it did. I can only promise that they (Cabramatta) will face a different Mounties side next time.”

Halves Drew Dalton and Damien Mostyn tried hard to spark their side into action but nothing was going to stop the Two Blues on the day. For the Cabramatta side, Francis Vaioutu took out the player’s player and man of the match awards and will continue to remain a key focal point in the Two Blues surge towards the play-offs.

CABRAMATTA V CAMPBELLTOWN MATCH REPORT (05/07/10)

Cabramatta remain entrenched on the bottom of the Bundaberg Red Cup premiership ladder after slumping to yet another loss, this time to the in-form Campbelltown Eagles, 28-20.

Fresh from last week’s impressive victory over the Windsor Wolves, the Eagles were looking to continue their march toward their top five with a win at home but it was the Two Blues who came out firing as they raced to a 10 nil lead after just 15 minutes through tries to newcomers Jason Gray and Henry Iuta.
Unfortunately for the visitors, a number of errors enabled the home side back into the match as little men Sam Hoare and Amano Tovio found space amongst the tired Cabramatta forwards. Back-to-back tries gave the Eagles the lead and when Damien Kennedy barged his way over under the sticks just before half-time, the momentum had well and truly swung in Campbelltown’s favour.

Down by 18 points to 10, a half-time rev-up from coach Corey Ruttle saw the Two Blues return the hungrier side in the second half and it took only three minutes for Donny Thompson to narrow the gap to two, pouncing on an Andrew Dallalana kick to score right under the posts.
Cabramatta almost hit the lead shortly after but a pass from a rampaging Iuta aimed for winger Josh McIlvenny went over the sideline. It was an opportunity the Two Blues would go on to rue as a series of bizarre refereeing decisions cost them further attacking opportunities in the second half.

In a saw-seeing tussle, a determined try from close-range from back-rower Pat Franks appeared to restore the momentum for the Eagles, and when they crossed out wide in the 70th minute to extend their lead to 12 points, the game was as good as over for the Two Blues.
The Cabramatta side refused to give up and a late try to McIlvenny led to a final scoreline of 28-20.

Campbelltown’s Allan Soulten said that his side never felt safe in the contest and he was just happy to come away with the two points: “I must admit, I was pretty nervous when Cabramatta came back at us at the end there. I remember the way they beat us last time and it made the boys more determined to finish off well. Our forwards really led the way today and Pat Franks in particular was outstanding.”

Franks claimed man of the match for the Eagles, while opposite number James Roche took out the award for the Two Blues. Prop forward Jamie Small won yet another player’s player award for a courageous display in the middle.

Second-rower Francis Vaiotu summed up the feelings of the Two Blues’ camp: “I’m just gutted. It’s a real test for us now. I guess we just have to hang tight and keep working hard.”

Cabramatta travel to Mounties on Sunday for their next clash. Kick-off is at 2:30pm

WENTWORTHVILLE MAGPIES V CABRA TWO BLUES (28/06/10)

Reigning Premiers Wentworthville has disposed of a disappointing Cabramatta Two Blues outfit 36-16 last Saturday at New Era Stadium.

The home side’s preparation was thrown into chaos just moments before kick-off when centre Jason Chapman succumbed to a leg injury and they never seemed to recover as the Magpies raced to an 18 nil inside the opening quarter.

Cabramatta were left to rue yet another dreadful start to the match, a lack of ball and quality field position sapping the energy of coach Ruttle’s troops as the visitors ran riot.

Led by crafty halves Nadim Couri and Aaron Fluke and on the back of some superb second-phase play from prop Walter Vaeau, the Magpies were too slick and skilful for the Two Blues in the opening exchanges. While the Cabramatta side managed to claw the Magpies’ lead back to eight points on two occasions during the match, Wentworthville found another gear in the final 10 minutes to run away with the match. The Magpies are now within striking distance of the top five. Prop forward Ali Trad hopes his side can start building some momentum heading into the second half of the competition: “Cabramatta always provide a tough contest and tonight was no different. It was a big match for both sides. The boys really put in for the full 80 minutes and hopefully that gives us the confidence to go on with it for the rest of the season.”

The Magpies have proven a real bogey side for the Two Blues over the last couple of seasons and although neither team has enjoyed the success expected of them in 2010, it’s been the Wentworthville lads that have managed to lift when it’s mattered most in both clashes this year.

Old heads Andrew Dallalana and Jamie Small did their best to inspire a comeback during the second half but costly errors again proved the Two Blues downfall.

It’s a theme that has become all too familiar for coach Corey Ruttle, who looked a dejected figure after the game: “I know I’ve called on the fans to stick by us on a number of occasions this year, but tonight just wasn’t good enough. All I can say is: we’ve been busting our backsides at training and are thankful for your support. Just keeping hanging in there and we’ll keep working hard to get the results.”

Second-rower Francis Vaiotu has been a shining light in an otherwise disappointing season so far for the Two Blues and he was able to cash in with yet another man of the match award. Vaiotu also earned the praise of his team-mates, picking up the player’s player award.

Cabramatta travel to Waminda Oval to take on the Campbelltown Eagles next Sunday at 3pm. The Eagles will be high on confidence after knocking off the Windsor Wolves for the second time this season and will be looking to gain revenge for their one point loss to the Two Blues during their last encounter.

CABRAMATTA V THE ENTRANCE TIGERS MATCH REPORT (21/6/10)

The Entrance has leapt to the top of the Bundaberg Red Cup premiership ladder with a 26-20 over a spirited Cabramatta side at New Era Stadium on Saturday night.

The visitors quickly raced to a 16 nil lead with fullback Coedi Towney and centre Matt Nelson giving Cabramatta’s right hand side defence nightmares. Guided expertly around the park by evergreen half Alex Moore, the Tigers showed why they are the team to beat in this year’s competition as they almost put the match beyond the Two Blues’ reach in the opening 40. Not wanting a repeat of last weekend’s scoreline, the home side dug deep however, centre Freddy Latulipe first putting Daniel Cray in to score before Andrew Dallalana grubbered for winger Josh McIlvenny to touch down and reduce the lead to eight.

A second try to Grant Nelson in the 39th minute restored the ascendancy for The Entrance but a half-time score of 20-8 meant the match was still there for the taking.

The Two Blues started the second stanza in grand style with big interchange forward Mason Pure barging over from close range to reduce the gap to just six points.

Both teams mixed attacking flair with punishing defence in a highly entertaining match that came right down to the final quarter. The Tigers looked like they had put the Two Blues away when Moore crossed to leave the scoreline at 26-14, but when Jamie Small bagged his first four-pointer for the season in the 78th minute, the Two Blues fancied their chances of at least levelling the scores.

Tigers coach Jamy Forbes must have dreaded a repeat of the two sides’ round three clash (which ended in a draw) when Daniel Cray collected an Andrew Dallalana cross-field kick in the final minute of play but the flame-haired winger was brought down just inches short of the line.

Two Blues skipper Jamie Small lamented his team’s slow start to the match: “It seems like we need to wait for the other team to skip away to a lead before we decide to play some footy. We shouldn’t need it to get to that stage before we get motivated.”

The big front rower was one of the home side’s best and shared the player’s player award with hard-working lock-forward James Roche. Pat Fitzgerald was rewarded for his recent good form and an outstanding display on the night with the Man of the Match. For the visitors, Towney, Moore, Beau Woodley and the Nelson boys were stand-outs in a strong all-round effort.

New Era Stadium is again the venue for the Two Blues next clash with reigning Premiers, the Wentworthville Magpies. Kick-off is at 5:30pm, Saturday 26th June.

CABRAMATTA VS WINDSOR WOLVES MATCH REPORT (15/06/10)

Cabramatta received a Rugby League lesson on Saturday night, thumped 56-28 by competition heavyweights the Windsor Wolves.

A match that started promisingly enough for the Two Blues with an early try to flame-haired winger Daniel Cray soon turned into a nightmare as the Wolves posted four quick tries to jump to a 24-6 half-time lead.

A mistake from the kick-off summed up Cabramatta’s night and had it not been for three late tries, the scoreline could have been much worse for the visitors.

After achieving back-to back wins for the first time this year, the Two Blues were expected to provide stiff opposition for the home side but a host of errors meant they were never really in the contest.

Andrew Dallalana earned man of the match and Francis Vaitou received the player’s player award for a dynamic display in the second-row.

Cabramatta will be out for redemption on Saturday at home against The Entrance Tigers. Kick-off is at 5:30 at New Era Stadium and the club encourages all supporters to come along for a great night of footy.

CABRAMATTA VERSUS BROTHERS MATCH REPORT (31/05/10)
by James Roche

Cabramatta have recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season, crushing Brothers 46-26 at New Era Stadium last Saturday night.

Broken lights at the northern end of the ground painted a dim picture of proceedings, but while the ambience may have remained on par with a candle-lit dinner, there were certainly nothing romantic about the Two Blues performance as some punishing first-half defence laid the platform for a crushing victory.

In easily their most dominant performance of the season, the Cabramatta side were slick from the outset, defying the wet and greasy conditions to score some scintillating tries. The first of which arrived in the 11th minute, when some brilliant second phase play saw the ball swing from one side of the field to the next, with Jamie Small and James Roche combining to pick up five eighth Matt Lamb, who in turn linked with Fred Latulipe to put winger Daniel Cray over out wide. Dallalana converted and then laid on the next try for Josh McIlvenny; a pin-point cross-field kick finding the flying head-geared hero to score in the 21st minute.

Down 12 nil, the Brothers side finally achieved some quality field position of their own, and were able to capitalise through a 25th minute try to Blake Williams after McIlvenny slipped over in-goal trying to retrieve a kick. The Penrith side kicked early and deep into Cabramatta territory and the game looked set to develop into a real grind, but the brilliance of debutant Latulipe and fullback Donny Thompson ensured that Cabramatta would restore their two-try lead.
Taking off from dummy half, the young centre snuck his nose through the defensive line before popping a sensational ball to the flying Thompson. One-on-one with opposing number Chris Morson, Thompson kicked over the top, regathered and scored one of the tries of the season.

Cabramatta should have gone to the sheds with a 14 point lead but a determined try to Rodney Peake just before the break gave the Brothers side hope heading into the second half. There were no signs of complacency in the Cabramatta camp however, with the home side scoring in their first set of the second stanza through a rampaging Mason Pure to extend their lead to 22-4.
Halves Matt Lamb and Andrew Dallalana directed play expertly for the Two Blues, the latter rolling the ball in behind the Brothers line for Latulipe to score his first try in the Bundy Red Cup just five minutes later.
Dallalana converted for a 28-8 lead but while the bounce of the ball didn’t seem to be going their way, the Brothers side refused to give up and a 59th minute try to wide-running back-rower Latu Fifita reduce the lead again to 14.

Matt Lamb ruined any chance of a dream comeback however, steaming on to a Donny Thompson pass to score a well deserved try. Dallalana converted to make it 34-14 and then played a hand in Latulipe’s double: the half hoisting a huge bomb that the visitor’s back three were unable to defuse. The young centre collected the scraps and after Dallalana’s conversion, Cabramatta held a 40-14 lead after 67minutes.

Late tries to Fifita and Dave Cahalane restored a degree of pride for the Brothers outfit but it was Cabramatta who had the final say, Dallalana capping off a masterful display with a try of his own in the 77th minute after great lead-up work yet again by fullback Thompson. Fifita finished the game strongly for the visitors and fullback Chris Morson was as committed as ever behind the line. For the home side, Jamie Small was a stand-out in a great team effort, taking out man of the match. Donny Thompson took out the player’s player award.

Brothers Captain Mick Hawkings was as shocked as anyone with the scoreline: “It’s funny really. That was our strongest side out there tonight … it was a disappointing result but well done to Cabramatta for finding some form.” Cabramatta Coach Corey Ruttle was extremely pleased with the manner in which his side disposed of such quality opposition: “It was a great effort tonight. We haven’t had things go our way lately but credit to the boys for training hard and hanging tough as a team.” Ruttle also singled out debutants Latulipe and hooker Daniel Galati for their fantastic displays: “Fred Latulipe and Daniel Galati are local juniors who got their chance tonight and they were both superb. They came back from the Eels under 20’s and we’re happy to have them … [But] if they’re not good enough to be playing in that side, then Parra are deadest kidding themselves.”

Cabramatta 46 (F Latulipe 2, D Cray, J McIlvenny, D Thompson, M Pure, M Lamb, A Dallalana Tries; Dallalana 7 Goals) defeated Brothers 26 (L Fifita 2, B Williams, R Peak, D Cahalane Tries; C Morson 3 Goals)

CABRAMATTA V CAMPBELLTOWN MATCH REPORT 24/5/10

Cabramatta have returned to the winner’s circle with a heart-stopping 22-21 over the Campbelltown Eagles at New Era Stadium on Saturday night.

A field goal to Wayde Dunley in the 75th minute appeared to have sealed the match for the visitors, but Cabramatta refused to yield, a final assault on the Campbelltown try-line rewarded with a penalty 30 metres out and to the left of the uprights. Half Andrew Dallalana was a picture of composure as he nailed the goal, sending the home crowd into raptures and leaving the Campbelltown boys at the foot of the ladder.

Both teams arrived in search of a much-needed win but it was the Two Blues who got off to the perfect start when five-eighth Matt Lamb dummied and jinked his way to the try-line in the opening minutes. The conversion was unsuccessful but it was Cabramatta with all the momentum as they continued to attack the Campbelltown line.

The visitors dug deep however, and after working their way up field, were able to reply with a try of their own through Tim Soama off a cross-field bomb in the 17th minute. Levi Dodd converted for a 6-4 score-line but the Eagles’ lead didn’t last too long: Keith Heckenberg delivering a perfect pass to a flying Donny Thompson to cross just six minutes later. Dallalana converted to put the Two Blues ahead 10-6.

An arm-wrestle ensued between the two sides and it looked like the score would remain unchanged leading into half-time. Replacement forward Damien Kennedy had other ideas, charging on to a great pass from hooker Sam Hoare to score beside the posts. Dodd converted and added a penalty right on half-time to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead at the break.

Neither team was able to stamp their ascendancy on the match until the 66th minute, when Tyrone Faliuga capitalised on an overlap to score out wide for the visitors. Dodd converted and suddenly the Eagles had a 10 point lead.

The Two Blues turned to big centre Vinnie Uelese for inspiration and were rewarded with a sensational solo try leading into the final ten minutes. Cabramatta then found themselves in perfect field position just minutes later after a Campbelltown error. On the back of another Uelese charge, lock-forward James Roche was too big and too strong close to the line. Dallalana converted from beside the posts and at 20-all with five minutes to go, a grandstand finish was inevitable.

Dunley slotted his field goal from 30m out to give the Eagles faithful a belief that victory was theirs, but on their final attacking raid of the match, the Two Blues were granted the decisive penalty which sealed the match: a high tackle on Josh McIlvenny leading to the penalty goal and the vital two competition points for the Cabramatta side.

Sam Hoare and Levi Dodd were a constant menace to the opposition for the Eagles, while for the Two Blues, player’s player Vinnie Uelese was unstoppable out wide. James Roche was rewarded for his dynamic display with the Man of the Match award.

The Two Blues host the Penrith Brothers outfit on Saturday at New Era Stadium. Kick-off is 5:30pm.

Cabramatta 22 (M Lamb, D Thompson, V Uelese, J Roche Tries; Dallalana 3 Goals) defeated Campbelltown 21 (T Soama, D Kennedy, T Faliuga Tries; L Dodd 4 Goals; W Dunley Field Goal)

CABRAMATTA V BULLS MATCH REPORT (10/5/10)

A nightmare start to the match has again cost the Cabramatta Two Blues as they crashed to their fourth loss in the row, 38-22 to the Bankstown Bulls.
An error in the first set of six for the match set the tone for the visitors, and the Bulls made the most of the opportunity with a try in just the second minute of play through lock Chris Salem.
Cabramatta’s left-hand side defence looked shaky in the early exchanges and former Two Blue James Trotter took full advantage, running on to a long ball from Pat Weisner to cross out wide in the 9th minute.
12 nil became 18 nil shortly after when five eighth Toufic Nicholas pounced on a Cabramatta dropped-ball before chipping over the top and regathering in spectacular fashion to score.
With a lack of field position and quality ball, the Two Blues struggled to contain the Bulls juggernaut, and it looked like it was going to be a very long day for the visitors when Brent Beddy crossed in the 24th minute to make it 22 nil.
Coach Corey Ruttle made a host of changes and with a renewed attitude in defence, the Two Blues fought their way back into the match. Debutante Vinnie Uelese took advantage of an overlap out-wide to register his first try in the Bundy Red Cup and the visitors’ first score for the day.
At 22-4, it was vital that the visitors were first to score in the second half and they were able to achieve that through a try to flame-haired winger Daniel Cray off an Andrew Dallalana cross-field kick. Dallalana converted from out wide and at 22-10, the Two Blues were well and truly back in contention.
Both sides went try-for-try in an evenly contested second stanza, with Arthur Little and David Mansour’s four pointers matched by Man of the Match Francis Vaiotu’s double for the Two Blues.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they gave the Bulls too much of a head-start and simply ran out of steam in the end. Each team will now have the week off before the competition resumes on the 15th of May.

Bankstown Bulls 38 (A Little 2, C Salem, J Trotter, T Nicholas, B Beddy, D Mansour tries; M Mahon 5 goals) defeated Cabramatta Two Blues 22 (F Vaiotu 2, V Uelese, D Cray tries; A Dallalana 3 goals)

ROUND 6 REVIEW - vs WINDSOR

The Windsor Wolves have continued their devastating form of late with a 44-12 thumping of the Cabramatta Two Blues at New Era Stadium.

The Wolves side, led by prop forward Edward Maiava, laid the platform up front for their slick backline to prosper out wide. The opening quarter was all one way traffic as the visitors raced to a 16 nil lead. The Two Blues refused to concede defeat however, and fought back right on the stroke of half-time through a try to Jason Gray off a Donny Thompson grubber. Despite two second half tries to Man-of-the-match Andrew Dallalana, the home side couldn’t halt the momentum of the Windsor outfit, which piled on the points in the final quarter to run out conclusive winners.

Apart from Dallalana, centre Francis Vaiotu had another impressive match out wide and interchange forward Cameron Collenette gave the opposition headaches with a series of big hits and barnstorming charges.

The Two Blues travel to The Crest Stadium on Saturday to take on fierce rivals, the Bankstown Bulls. Both teams are coming off comprehensive defeats and will be determined to get back into the winner’s circle.

Windsor Wolves 44 (J Sene-Lefano 3, T Bolt 2, D Chiha, B Vengoa, B Stewart, M Hall tries;  B Stewart 4 goals) Defeated Cabramatta Two Blues 12 (A Dallalana 2, J Gray Tries)

CABRAMATTA V WENTWORTHVILLE MATCH REPORT (25/4/10)

The highly anticipated Grand Final rematch between Cabramatta and Wentworthville has led to defeat for the Two Blues, with the reigning Premiers running out winners 32-22 at Ringrose Park.
With both teams struggling so far this season, a good start was vital, and the Magpies got that via an Astro Waetford Try in just the 5th minute of play after a number of sets attacking the Two Blues line. The visitor’s then built on some repeat sets of their own to touch down in the 12 minute through flame-haired winger Daniel Cray, who steamed on to a long ball from Andrew Dallalana to cross for his first try for the season.
At 4-all after 20 minutes, all signs pointed to a tight and torrid affair but the remainder of the half belonged to the Magpies as three tries took them out to a commanding 20-4 lead. The first came from rangy prop Luke Young, who took advantage of a fast play the ball to barge over from close range. Sharp-shooter Aaron Fluke converted from out wide and then bagged a four-pointer of his own on the 30 minute mark, taking advantage of some quick-hands along the backline as the home side started to capitalise on a wealth of possession.
The Magpies started making breaks at will as the Two Blues began to tire heading into half-time. A try from winger Grayson Goodwin after another sweeping backline move in the 36th minute left the visitors shell-shocked, and the scoreline could have been much worse had Cray not delivered a spectacular try-saving tackle on a rampaging Kerosome Sione shortly after.
Coach Corey Ruttle questioned his side’s intensity during the interval but assured his troops that they were more than capable of scoring the necessary points required for victory if their defence held strong.
The second half began well for the Cabramatta side when a Wenty mistake in their own quarter lead to interchange forward Cameron Collenette finding the speedy Jason Gray to score out wide. Dallalana converted and at 20-10, the visitor’s appeared to have regained the momentum as they continued to pressure the Magpies’ goal-line. The home side seemed out on their feet until intercept-king Waetford plucked a long-ball from Donny Thompson out of the air and tore up field. The big winger looked set to score his second try of the afternoon until a flying Jason Gray mowed him down with one of the tackles of the year. Cabramatta did their best to hold on but when centre Sam Aiga capitalised on an overlap on the left hand side of the field to score soon after and Fluke converted, the lead was again out to 16 in favour the Magpies.
Not deterred by the try against the run of play, the visitors stuck to their guns and after a series of denting runs from forwards James Roche and Jamie Small, were able to pressure the Wenty line yet again. This time however, they decided to play the ball through the hands, as back-rower Mason Pure popped a short ball to player’s player Francis Vaiotu to score for the Two Blues.
In an engrossing final quarter, it became clear that the next scorer would go on to win the game. Unfortunately for the Cabramatta side, it was Young again who proved too much of a handful for the defence, bursting through on the short-side before finding centre Ben Taia, who in turn found Aiga for the decisive try.
Two Blues winger Cray crossed for his second try right on full-time but it was mere consolation for the visiting team.
While happy with the victory, former Two-Blue Sam Aiga had mixed feelings about the result: “It was a weird feeling playing against all my old team-mates and I definitely miss the boys. I was happy for the win but felt sorry for the likes of ‘Smally’ and ‘Dalla’ after such a tough loss.”
Cabramatta Assistant Coach Chris Yates saw the Waetford intercept as a huge turning point in the game: “That was a 12 point turn-around and it proved too much in the end. At the end of the day though, we gave them too much of a start and simply aren’t playing well enough to win at the moment.”
Wentworthville 32 (S. Aiga 2, A Fluke, G. Goodwin, A Waetford Tries, L Young tries; Fluke 4 goals) defeated Cabramatta 22 (D Cray 2, J Gray, F Vaiotu tries; Dallalana 3 goals)

PENRITH BROTHERS MATCH REPORT (17/04/10)

A fired up Brothers outfit has knocked off a sluggish Cabramatta Two Blues 22-6 at New Era Stadium on Saturday night.

Led by evergreen front-rower Mick Hawkings and partner-in-crime Shane Saunders, the Penrith side caught the out-of-sorts Cabramatta side on the hop as they dominated the early exchanges.

After a titanic opening quarter, field position soon turned to points for the visitors with tries to wingers Allan Eisenhuth and Brad Williams. Chris Morson converted both tries and the Brothers side held a commanding 12 point lead. However, Cabramatta were able to reply in kind through Jason Chapman, with the centre pouncing on a Donny Thompson grubber kick to cross out wide. Andrew Dallalana continued his fine form with the boot, sinking the conversion and pegging the visitor’s lead back to six.

The lethargic Two Blues were lucky to still be in the game at half-time, and would have taken some solace at the fact they were behind by just 12 points to 6. Had it not been for some desperate last ditch defence and the late try to Chapman, things could have been much worse for the home side.

A fired up Corey Ruttle tore strips off his troops in the sheds but it seemed that nothing could help the Two Blues on the night as key errors and a committed defence kept them at bay in the second 40.

Not even the send-off of the inspirational Hawkings in the 65th minute for a high shot on Dallalana could stop the determined Brothers side as they continued to repel raid after raid of Cabramatta attack. Dallalana bounced off the canvas to direct his side with aplomb but the Two Blues just couldn’t cross the line. The crafty half was matched by opposite number Jaye Mairleitner, whose kicking game was a feature of the Brothers attack.

Only one try was scored in what proved to be a dour second half, with Dave Cahalane leaping above the pack to touch down off a Mairleitner bomb. Marleitner capped off a masterful display with two field goals to sink the hearts of the Cabramatta faithful.

Mairleitner, Hawkings and Saunders were the best for the visitors but it is their ability to play as a unit that is causing opposition teams the most headaches. For Cabramatta, Donny Thompson took out the player’s player award and was a constant threat to the Brother’s defensive line. Jamie Small put in another powerful 80 minute display to take out the man of the match. While clearly disappointed with the result, the skipper wanted to assure fans that his team will bounce back next week: “It might not have looked like it, but we certainly tried hard out there. Unfortunately it wasn’t our night but we’ll be back next week.”

Brothers 22 (Williams, Cahalane, Eisenhuth tries; Morson 4 goals; Mairleitner 2 field goals) defeated Cabramatta Two Blues 6 (Chapman Try; Dallalana Goal)

THE ENTRANCE VS CABRAMATTA MATCH REPORT (12/4/10)

A brilliant sideline conversion from half Andrew Dallalana has ensured the Cabramatta Two Blues escaped EDSAAC Oval with a vital point after a hard-fought 22 all draw with The Entrance Tigers.
In a match that the Two Blues appeared to let slip, Dallalana not only nailed the all- important kick but played his part in the final try, putting Mase Laulu Togagae into space before the centre found a flying Jason Gray to score in the corner. The half then drew on all his experience to block out a vocal home crowd and send the ball sailing between the posts for the equaliser as the full-time siren sounded in the background.
Earlier, Cabramatta bucked their recent trend of slow starts with a powerful opening quarter, as their high completion rate and strong defence ensured the match was played deep in Tigers territory. Fullback Donny Thompson continually tested the home side’s defence and after a raid down the Tiger’s right hand side was able to put Jason Chapman over for the first try of the game.

The Entrance worked their way back into the match and after a number of repeat sets, was able to equalise through a rampaging Mark Jurd.
Some astute interchanges from Cabramatta coach Ruttle ignited the Two Blues side and when back-rower Nick Kassis charged on to a short ball from Dallalana to cross next to the posts, the visitors took a 12-6 lead into the break.
In a see-sawing second half, both teams held the lead at different stages, but when The Entrance scored back-to-back tries through Grant and Matt Nelson, the momentum was in favour of the home side.
But the Two Blues weren’t out of the contest yet and their never-say-die attitude was reflected in Gray’s four-pointer in the dying moments of the match.
Ruttle was relieved to leave with a point in the end but was critical of his player’s attention to detail: “The time has come for us to stop giving away silly penalties, to stop dropping the ball and to stop giving teams a sniff when we should be putting our foot on the throat.”
Concentration has been a problem for Ruttle’s men so far this season and in such a tight competition, they will need to make sure that they better seize their opportunities when presented to them. Captain Jamie Small remained upbeat however, suggesting that they remain a quality side, even when not playing their best football: “We should take confidence from the fact that we are competing with the best sides in the comp, even when we are playing poorly by our standards. We will lift in the weeks to come.”
Tigers coach Jamy Forbes nominated tireless back-rower Beau Woodley and centre Matt Nelson as amongst his best. While disappointed at not holding on for the win, he acknowledged that they would have been luck to get away with the two points: “I’m not dirty at all with the result. A draw in the end was probably the fair outcome.
For Cabramatta, workaholic lock Keith Heckenberg was outstanding. He battled through the 80 minutes unchanged in the hot and sticky conditions and led the way along with elusive fullback Donny Thompson. Super-sub James Roche also earned praised from the coaching staff.
The Two Blues return to New Era Stadium next Saturday to take on a Brothers outfit fresh from their first victory of the season, while the Tigers hit the road for their match with an in-form Campbelltown Eagles outfit.

CABRAMATTA TWO BLUES VS BULLS ROUND 2 MATCH REPORT

A first half blitzkrieg from the Bankstown City Bulls has handed the Cabramatta Two Blues their first loss for the 2010 season, 24-14 at New Era Stadium.
After a brutal opening quarter, the scores were locked at nil all, but the highly anticipated clash was blown apart following quick tries by the Bulls’ Danny Barakat, Toufic Nicholas and Brett Finn, giving the visitors and almost unassailable 18 nil lead.
The Bulls, led out of dummy half by former Two Blue Trent Trotter and half Mitch Mahon, were too quick around the ruck, enabling them to build great field position and keeping the home side firmly on the back foot.
Renowned for their dynamic attack, it was no surprise to see the Bulls constantly threaten the Two Blues defensive line, but it was the ease at which the visitors managed to eventually cross that would have disappointed Cabramatta coach Ruttle, particularly after the arm wrestle of the opening 20 minutes.
It was Barakat who crossed first for the Bulls in the 21st minute, diving over from dummy half after back-rower Chris Salem was pulled down just short of the Cabramatta line. The second and third tries were scored in almost identical fashion just minutes later, first through five eighth Nicholas and then through Finn, who appears to be relishing his new role at Lock. Mahon was flawless with the boot, rubbing salt into the Cabramatta wounds with three booming sideline conversions.
Cabramatta were certainly on the ropes but after a spirited half time rev-up from Ruttle and assistant Chris Yates, the home side returned for the second half with renewed resolve.
The controversial sin binning of half Andrew Dallalana meant the home side struggled for direction at the resumption of play, but by failing to concede a point with 12 men, the Two Blues were able to work their way back into the contest through their strong defence.
The return of Dallalana sparked the Two Blues back into action, first grubber-kicking for Jason Chapman to score and then combining with Mase Laulu Togagae to put Greg Fulmer over in the corner.
Sensing a shift in momentum, the home crowd got behind the Cabramatta side and when Nick Kassis sent Donny Thompson on a 60 metre run to the line just moments later, the roof was almost lifted off the stadium.
At 18-14, the game was anyone’s, but as the match entering the final 10 minutes, a bit of individual brilliance from Bulls fullback Adnan Saleh put the game beyond the reach of the Two Blues.
Taking advantage of some tired defence on the fringes, Saleh broke through from 40 metres out and evaded the cover defence to send the boys from Bankstown home with the valuable competition points.
Coach Ruttle was left to lament the huge start his side gave the Bulls in the first side but was proud of the way his troops rallied in the second half: “Most teams would have dropped their heads at 18 nil and a team with less character would not have come back the way we did. I’m disappointed with the result but more than happy with the character shown and the effort put in by the boys.”
Jamie Small and Nick Kassis produced powerful 80 minute performances for the Two Blues, with Kassis taking home both the Players’ Player and Man of the Match Awards.
For the visitors, veteran prop Charlie Farah produced a strong display up front and Adnan Saleh was dangerous from full-back.
The Two Blues travel to The Entrance next weekend for their round three clash. The Central Coast team are undefeated after the opening two rounds and will provide stiff opposition for the Cabramatta side.

CABRAMATTA TWO BLUES VS MOUNTIES ROUND 1 MATCH REPORT

The Cabramatta Two Blues have won a fiercely contested opening round clash with cross-town rivals Mounties 24-20 at Cook Park on Saturday night.
The opening exchanges were brutal and the crowd was treated to a frenetic opening 20 minutes as both teams looked to gain the ascendancy. Centre Wayne Dargin opened the scoring after six minutes for the home side, but the visitors wasted no time in responding through a try to Mase Laulu Togagae after smart work down the blind side from Matt Lamb.
Opportunities were few and far between for The Two Blues but an impressive set play saw back-rower Nick Kassis stride into a yawning gap to give the visitors an 8-6 lead in the 23rd minute. Mounties prop Pat Galea ensured the visitors wouldn’t skip away with a try of his own just four minutes later and after the conversion from Drew Dalton, the home side were back in the lead. Despite a mountain of possession, they were unable to convert a series of further chances and the score remained 10-8 at the break.
Playmaker Dalton took advantage of a lethargic Cabramatta defence to lay on a try to Dean Loder early in the second half, chipping and regathering before finding the speedy centre. A successful conversion pushed the lead out to eight as Mounties began to build some momentum.
Cabramatta finally managed to earn some field position of their own and when Andrew Dallalana sent super-sub James Roche on a 30 metre charge to the line, the tide began to turn. A try from close range to workhorse lock Keith Heckenberg put the Two Blues in the lead and Francis Vaiotu sealed the win in the 76th minute, charging on to a short ball from Lamb from 20 metres out.
Mounties refused to give up and finished in fine style through a second try to centre Dargin but it was a mere consolation for the home side, with Cabramatta holding on for the win.
Props Pat Fitzgerald and Jamie Small laid the foundations for the win up front for the Two Blues, while halves Matt Lamb and Andrew Dallalana expertly directed the side around the park. Donny Thompson as always, was dangerous at fullback.
On the losing side, Centres Wayne Dargin and Dean Loder proved a handful for the defence out wide and Jamie Clark was dangerous out of dummy half.
Both teams should benefit from the tough hit-out and will again be two of the sides to beat in the Bundaberg Red Cup.
Cabramatta 24 (Laulu Togagae, Kassis, Roche, Heckenberg, Vaiotu Tries; Dallalana 2 Goals) defeated Mounties 20 (Dargin 2, Galea, Loder Tries; Dalton 2 Goals)

ASK YATESY

THIS IS YOUR LIFE SPECIAL
After receiving over 249 letters and questions relating to long-time trainer Ian ‘SLIPPERY’ Morris, aka ‘Big E,’ this week’s Ask Yatesy will take on a different approach through a This is Your Life special. NOTE: Due to budget constraints & various logistical difficulties, all guests were interviewed via telephone hook up.
Ian Morris, born in 1962, was the youngest of seven brothers and a bloody nuisance to his fifteen sisters. Ian grew up in the Tuna fishing town of Port Lincoln, South Australia. It was there at the local St Joseph’s school that ‘Big E’ met childhood best friend Dean Lukin OAM. Lukin of course, shot to fame as a world class power lifter, winning Gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Morris and Lukin were much bigger and stronger than the other boys growing up and at the age of seven left school to work on the Lukin family tuna boat. For fun, they would catch 100 pound Tuna on handlines to see who was the strongest. When they weren’t fishing they were pumping iron at the local gym.
Sadly, their friendship came to an abrupt end early in 1984, with both competing for the only spot in the 110kg weightlifting class on Australia’s Olympic team. Both had previously lifted the combined Qualifying weight of 406.5kg’s. However, history shows that Ian didn’t make it to the qualifying tournament due to a severe bout of gastroenteritis, thus robbing him of the opportunity to represent his country at the Olympics. It was pointed out later on that ‘Big E’s’ last meal was cooked by Lukin’s father Lou - a homemade Tuna casserole. Dean Lukin went on to win Gold. Ian Morris became a bitter and angry man.
‘Big E,’ disillusioned with not claiming the Gold, turned his hand to the lucrative Bare Knuckle Pub Fighting Circuit. He went on to ruthlessly dismantle 312 consecutive opponents. Ian’s manager, the late ‘Skipper Kelp’ ran out of fighters to take his young charger on, so in the summer of 1987 flew over three former USA Golden Gloves champions. ‘Big E’ went on to make light work of ‘Firey’ Frankie Tate of Detroit and Parker White of Knoxville. However, it was during his final pub fight against Jackie Beard of the Rocky Mountains that ‘Big E’ managed to etch his place in folklore.
Legend has it that Beard, while on honeymoon in Alaska, “killed a bear with his own hands.” Yet he was no match for ‘Big E’, Australia’s greatest pub fighter. The bout ended in the 47th min with ‘Big E’ smashing a pool cue over Beard’s head. ESPN recently rated the titanic Morris v Beard clash as the ‘Pub Fight of the Century.’ The fight was later immortalised on the silver screen in the classic film Any Which Way but Loose when Philo Beddoe (Clint Eastwood) takes on Tank Murdock (Walter Barnes).
Morris declined to talk about the next 23 years of his life but it is believed he spent much of the time searching for Mr Miyagi, of Karate Kid fame, to be his trainer. He eventually found Miyagi (real name Pat Morata) working at a Wallmart in America in between B-part movies. It was Miyagi and ‘Big E’ that originally discovered the powers of gingseng and as a result, they were allegedly the original brains behind the Red Bull energy drink. But what of his current role as Cabramatta Rugby League Bundy Red Cup trainer?
Ian has been known over the years, when ‘Cabra’ have been down or facing certain defeat to pull on a jersey, sprint on to the field, take it off the tap and charge at their biggest or best player, steamrolling them and ironing them out for the match. He would then turn to the team and yell: “Have a F*%$#@& go” before turning around and resuming his position on the sideline. This has resulted in a remarkable comeback victory for the Two Blues on every occasion.
Outside of his family, Ian’s greatest passion is his love of stamps & the Australian mail system. That love has its ups and downs. ‘Big E’ was moved out of the mail room recently when, whilst licking stamps, he had a nasty reaction to the adhesive glue on the back of them. Due to his large frame, Ian is also the only mailman in Fairfield that delivers the mail in a Nissan Patrol.
The man. The mountain. The icon. The bloody legend: Ian “Slippery” Morris  - THIS IS YOUR LIFE.

Keep the letters coming in sports fans.
Yours in sport,
Yatesy

MOUNTIES MATCH REPORT

The Cabramatta Two Blues have gained a psychological edge over local rivals Mounties heading into their round one match-up with a gritty 16-10 victory in last weekend’s trial.
Greasy conditions welcomed both sides on to the field at New Era Stadium on Friday night but despite the large amount of dropped ball, fans were treated to an entertaining duel in which both clubs fielded close to full strength teams.
In what was the first major hit-out for many of the Cabramatta players, it was Mounties who started out on the front-foot, converting field position into points with an early try off a Drew Dalton cross-field kick.
Cabramatta wasted little time in replying thanks to a Nick Kassis try off a sensational Andrew Dallalana around-the-corner pass. The Two Blues continued to grow in confidence and a barnstorming try from winger Henry Iuta gave the home side an 8-6 lead at the break.

The second stanza remained a see-sawing affair in which the visitors managed to hold on to a 10-8 lead heading in to the final ten minutes. Cabramatta stuck to their guns however, and when the Mounties back three were unable to clean up an attacking kick, Kassis capped off a solid game by being on the spot again for his second try and the match-winner.
Coach Ruttle founded it difficult to single out any individual stars for his side, with all players contributing equally to the victory.
Despite missing regular fullback Donny Thompson,  Josh Casey showed fans that there will be no troubles with depth this year, providing another impressive performance in attack and defence from behind the line. The forwards continued to work well as a unit and Matt Lamb was as dangerous as ever, filling in at both five eighth and hooker at various stages of the match and providing a crucial 40-20 kick late in the game.
The club travels to Forster on Friday the 12th of March for its final trial match, with competition still stiff for positions in the side for round one.

EMU PLAINS MATCH REPORT

The Cabramatta Two Blues enjoyed mixed success on the weekend, winning the A Grade trial but narrowly falling short in the Bundy Red trial against Emu Plains.
Led by half Matt Casey and dynamic interchange hooker Alex Engelen, the Two Blues little men ran the Emu Plains forwards ragged in the oppressive conditions at New Era Stadium, running away with the A Grade match 44-6.
Further showcasing the clubs’ impressive depth, Coach Corey Ruttle decided to rest 10 regulars for the Bundy Red Cup trial, and the early signs were positive for the home side as a series of big hits left the visitor’s rattled.
While the attitude and enthusiasm of the squad could not be questioned, the Two Blues were left to rue a series of missed opportunities leading into the final stanza, eventually falling to the Penrith A-Grade Premiers, 20-16.
It was the club’s first major hit-out for the year but there were several positive signs to take from the match, particularly the performances of hooker Luke Fahy and front-rower Pat Fitzgerald. Jason Gray was as elusive as ever on the wing and will definitely be one to watch this season.
Played in 3 x 25 minute periods, Ruttle tinkered with a number of players in different positions. While the combinations definitely need improvement, the signs were positive for the Two Blues heading into this week’s trial.

All fans are invited to come along to New Era Stadium on Friday the 5th of March at 5.30pm then 7pm for the local derby between the Two Blues and Mounties.

ASK YATESY

This weeks Question comes from Richie Benaud look-alike, all-round good guy and Australian of the Year nominee Jimmy Murphy.

Jim's Question: Yatesy, how do you get up for a big game?

Well I hope it’s rugby league you’re talking about here Jimmy because there are a few nasal sprays out there that may be able
to assist with your problem. However, I’m not sure if they’re on the ASDA banned list or not and they may not be welcome in
Rugby League circles. Let’s see… in your day Jimmy, during the era of unlimited tackles, the preparation for a big game may
have involved inviting your best mates around to your house, stocking the fridge full of silver bullets, firing up the BBQ and
running up a bill with the local SP bookie as you listen to the races on the wireless. After your mates had drunk and eaten
everything in the house, it was probably time to relax with the missus and have a game of knee footy in the lounge room
(clothing optional) to work on your tackle technique and score a couple of easy tries on the hush-pile carpet to lift your
confidence before the big game. But Jimmy that was a long time ago. These days I'd advise any player looking for a big game to
(no offence ladies) get their girlfriends as far away as possible - maybe shout them a weekend away with a couple of their
girlfriends to a 5 star caravan park up the coast. Woy Woy springs to mind and it's lovely at this time of year (there’s no
better place than Mt Druitt on the water). Watching love movies or listening to advice from the missus the night before the
big game could see you turn in a sub-standard performance and watching your team from the stands the following week. After
the missus has safely headed up the F3, load the fridge full of Gatorades, prepare some chicken & pasta and sit back and watch
Super Saturday on Fox Sports in peace. Thanks for your question Jimmy. It’s clear from listening to a few of Jimmy’s stories at
training about footy in the ‘old days’ that it's bloody lucky he's still with us.

Just a quick tip if you’re going to wet a line this summer: don’t forget your fishing license. You can get them online or at your
 local Bait n’ Tackle shop.

I look forward to next week’s question. Keep em’ coming sports fans.

ASK YATESY

Our SIDELINE EYE Chris Yates addresses the big issues, both on and off the field!
We had one Question mailed in this week and that was from Josh "BRUCE' Mclllvenny, a young Cabra centre who is asking for some tips on taking out a girl for the first time.
First up mate, I'd be clipping that cat hair beard you’re sporting at the moment. The young lady may suffer from hayfever and if you sneeze it might fall off. Secondly, present yourself well. Maybe borrow a pair of your Dad’s slacks matched with a sensible polo shirt - that should do the trick. Hopefully you've saved some of your Birthday money and can take her somewhere other than Sizzler for dinner. Stay away from any Indian or spicy foods or you might find yourself buckled over in pain and speeding towards the local BP servo in search of some gastro-eze: an embarassing pit stop that may cruel any chance of a follow up date or if you’re lucky, a kiss in the car outside her parent’s house. Also Josh, it wouldn't hurt to drop her Dad off a 6 pack of Pilsners and her mum a packet of Benson and Hedges super mild cigarettes. Good luck Josh.

I look forward to next week’s question. Keep em’ coming in sports fans!

INTERNATIONAL 9's WRAP UP

Cabramatta’s Bundy Red Cup side were taught a lesson in teamwork from their less fancied clubmates at Saturday’s International Nines Tournament at New Era Stadium. After bowing out in the quarter finals of the plate competition, Corey Ruttle’s men could only watch on as the Cabramatta’s ‘two’s’ team marched into the trophy final, narrowly losing to Campbelltown’s number one side in the decider 12-8.

Coach Paul Matthews had his side playing an entertaining brand of football with the likes of Jason Hardi and Henry Iuta prospering out wide. After putting an early loss to New Zealand Tonga behind them, the ‘two’s’ knocked off the Fijian Panthers, the Maori side and Penrith Brothers before falling just short in the Final.

Unfortunately, the club’s top ranked side were unable to join them in the decider after being knocked out by fierce rivals Wentworthville 26-10 in the plate quarter finals. Earlier in the day, the Two Blues started in scrappy fashion with a 16-4 loss to eventual Cup winners Windsor followed by a 12-8 win over Campbelltown 3. Coach Ruttle was forced to rue several missed opportunities in the quarter final, with the team’s sloppy ball-handling, sadly, the theme for the day. On a positive note, livewire Jason Grey was a constant threat to the defensive line and fans got their first taste of new additions to the squad: Luke Fahey, Mason Pure, Adam Bennett and Kyle Weh.

The day provided a solid hit-out before the club’s first trial match against Emu Plains on the 27th of February and was sure to have whet the appetite of all Two Blues fans as we head towards what is sure to be an exciting season.

Final results:
Bowl Final:
Campbelltown (2) 8 defeated Penrith Brothers (2) 4
Plate Final:
Campbelltown (1) 12 defeated Cabramatta (2) 8
Cup Final
Windsor 12 defeated Balmain 6
